What puts the ‘Great’ in Great Dunmow

By the Beresfords Marketing Team - 29th May 2013

This month we launched our latest office in Great Dunmow and as a result have been spending a great deal of time in this historic and cultural market town.  While we have had offices throughout Essex and into Greater & Central London for nearly 50 years and have been working in the country homes market in the local area for a number of years, this office represents our first tangible presence here, with the purchase of Foxton Hayes Estate Agents.

While getting to know the local area I have been fascinated by the rich history of the town. Here are just some of the interesting facts which contribute to Great Dunmow’s character and growing appeal.

Great Dunmow dates back to Roman times and the origin of Dunmow means meadow on the hill, which sums up the lovely rolling Essex countryside surrounding this thriving town.

Tourists come tens of thousands of miles to compete in the Flitch Trails which date back to 1104 and are held in the town every four years. The trials ask couples to convince a judge and jury that they have not 'not wisht themselves unmarried again', with the winning couples each presented with their very own flitch of bacon! You will have to wait until 2016 to sample it yourself!

Great Dunmow also benefits from excellent transportation links with Braintree and Bishops Stortford train stations to the east and west and Stansted just six miles away, all of which provide fast and regular services into central London.
