The most historic parts of Colchester

Colchester is a thriving, modern city with a bustling centre and plenty to see and do. However, take some time to look around and you’ll discover evidence of the city’s long and important history, too.

History of Colchester

While proudly claiming the title of ‘Britian’s first city’, Colchester’s history dates back thousands of years. This site has been home to an Iron Age settlement; the first Roman capital of Britainna; and Viking and Norman invasions. Medieval and Tudor life was enjoyed and endured here, and all the while past residents have left landmarks and artifacts giving a glimpse into their lives.

If you’re interested in the fascinating history of Colchester, there are plenty of places to visit to find out more. We’ve picked our top ten historic things to do in Colchester to get you started as you discover more about Britain’s first city.

Natural History Museum Colchester

This small but engaging museum is housed in the former All Saints Church. Perfect for families with plenty for children to engage with, you will learn about local geology and wildlife past and present.

Colchester Castle

A visit to Colchester Castle with the largest Norman keep in Europe is an absolute must. Interactive tablets bring history to life while the whole family will marvel at the Celtic coin hoards, Roman statues, civil war armour and more. Book onto a guided tour to delve even deeper into the history of this fascinating site.

Roman Circus Visitor Centre

In 2024, the site of the only known Roman circus in Britain was discovered. In its day it would have seated up to 8,000 spectators watching sports and chariot races, although little remains of the site itself. Today, a fascinating visitor centre tells its tale and is well worth a visit. We’d particularly recommend a guided tour during which enthusiastic guides bring the history of the Roman circus to life.

The Dutch Quarter

This residential area just north of the High Street makes for a pleasant stroll while soaking up the culture and history of Colchester. In the 16th century, Flemish Protestant refugees made their home here, bringing their taste in architecture with them.

Roman Church

Although there is relatively little to see at this site, it’s well worth a visit as it shows the foundations of what is thought to be the earliest known Christian church in Britain. Don’t let the fact some argue it could be a temple of Mithras deter you because, either way, it’s an incredible historic site contributing to the rich culture of Colchester right on your doorstep.

Roman Wall

One of our favourite Colchester attractions is what remains of the Roman wall: the earliest and best preserved in Britain. It was built after Queen Boudicca destroyed the town and would have stood almost six metres high. Sections stand to this day and seeking it out makes for a delightful walk and journey to the past. We’d recommend Castle Park as a good starting point.

St. John’s Abbey

Only the gatehouse of the abbey remains, but you’ll find yourself mesmerised by the workmanship of this beautiful 15th century structure. You won’t need long for a visit but certainly make the time to go and imagine the lives of the Benedictine monks who lived here long ago.

Colchester Town Hall

The Town Hall is a stunning, Baroque building with an impressive 162ft Victorian tower which can’t be missed as you stroll along the High Street. Opened in 1902, it is used to this day for civic purposes and is hired for weddings and events. Visit on Heritage Open Days or when it is not being used for events to have a look inside as well as out.

Hollytrees Museum

In Castle Park you’ll find Hollytrees Museum: a small museum within a beautiful Georgian town house. This site is dedicated to Colchester’s social history, giving insight into domestic life of the rich and poor. Visit Colchester Information Centre is also located here if you’re keen for more inspiration as you discover more about the history of Colchester.

High Street

The final place on our list of historic things to do in Colchester is a simple stroll along the High Street. Take your time as you walk and marvel at the incredible assortment of architecture including fine medieval and Georgian examples. The Romans first built a road here almost 2000 years ago so imagine as you explore how many thousands of feet have travelled this journey before you.
