Living in Hornchurch

Living in Hornchurch

Thanks to Hornchurch’s close proximity to the City and all its modern day facilities, the area has grown to be highly desirable.

Is Hornchurch a nice place to live?

Situated in the London Borough of Havering, East London, Hornchurch is a suburban town with a large residential area and a great assortment of amenities, including a number of shopping streets. Living in Hornchurch promises a quieter lifestyle, while staying close to central London and its many offerings.

Being one of London’s safest areas, Hornchurch is particularly attractive to families with children. Its combination of good schools and green spaces makes it an ideal location. What’s more, Hornchurch has a vast range of beautiful family homes, with property prices remaining considerably more affordable compared to neighbourhoods in central London.

Things to do in Hornchurch

Hornchurch is home to an excellent variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Harrow Lodge Park with its river, two lakes, and acres of greenery is a beautiful spot to enjoy a break from the town centre’s bustle. Hornchurch Country Park is another stunning location for nature walks, featuring woodland, a river, a fishing lake, and a number of historic military pillboxes.

There is also an abundance of sporting facilities in the suburb. The Abbs Cross Leisure Centre includes a gym, a fitness studio, and a swimming pool, while the Hornchurch Sports Centre houses a specialist diving pool as well as personal swimming and diving lessons. Skaters will be excited about The Rom - the only listed and preserved skatepark in Europe.

When it comes to leisure and entertainment, Hornchurch has plenty on offer too. First opened in 1975 by Sir Peter Hall, the Queen’s Theatre is a cultural cornerstone, hosting eight shows a year. The 500-seat venue also has its own costume and scenery workshops. The nearby Hornchurch library runs a variety of different groups and events, including children’s activities, poetry reading groups, arts and crafts, youth support, and services for older people.

Shopping and eating out

Thanks to Hornchurch’s brilliant location and all its modern day facilities, the area has no shortage of shopping and eating out opportunities. The vibrant high street with its wide variety of local shops and boutiques will cater to most daily needs. However, Romford’s large shopping centre, the Liberty Romford, and the famous outdoor market is only a short distance away.

Moreover, Hornchurch boasts a diverse selection of cafés, restaurants, and pubs, each bringing a unique dining experience. The local favourites include:

Rienna’s
Marley's Brasserie & Lounge;
Shish Meze Restaurant;
Giggling Squid;
Wildwood;
Fatling Hornchurch Pub;
The Harrow Pub;
Sutton Arms Pub;
The Good Intent Pub;
And many others!

Transport links

Being a part of Greater London, Hornchurch is well served by London buses and also has District Line Underground stations at Hornchurch, Upminster Bridge, and Elm Park. What’s more, the London Borough of Havering now has three stations on the Elizabeth line, making connectivity to the City, West End, and beyond easier than ever.

Just a few hundred yards from the town centre is Emerson Park Station. Whilst only a branch line, it connects in one stop to main line services at Romford (Liverpool Street) in one direction and Upminster (Fenchurch Street) the other.

For those who prefer to commute by car, road connections are equally convenient. The town has easy access to the A124 and A127, leading to the M25. The A12 and A13 roads also provide connections to the London City as well as towns like Brentwood, Ingatestone, or Chelmsford, in the opposite direction.

Hornchurch schools

Families with children can benefit from several well-regarded schools in and around the area.

For primary education, the Towers Infant School, Hacton Primary School, Harrow Lodge Primary School, and the Sacred Heart of Mary Girls’ School all boast “Outstanding” Ofsted ratings.

As for secondary schools, Hornchurch High School, the Olive AP Academy, Emerson Park Academy, and Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College are all excellent options with “Good” Ofsted ratings.

I went to view a property marketed by Beresford. I met with Reece and Daniel, agents showing the property. I have to admit, I had some reservation about estate agents as I have had bad experiences and therefore was so pleasantly surprised when I met with Reece and Daniel. They were so approachable and very friendly ( a far cry from what I’ve experienced). They guided me through both the properties and were very helpful with any questions I had. I am so glad I met them, it really made my day. They are very personable and their service was impeccable. Who knows whether the property I liked will go through but I’m so glad to have dealt with two of the best estate agents I’ve ever come across. I wish them both all the success for the future.
