Writtle is a picturesque village, characterised by its historic centre with timbered houses and a beautiful village green with a duck pond. Don’t let the small size fool you, though - Writtle has plenty of amenities, including a doctor’s surgery, dentist, small supermarkets, a post office, and a selection of quaint village pubs and restaurants.
What’s more, Writtle’s close proximity to the vibrant city of Chelmsford opens doors to bustling social scenes and excellent shopping experiences. And yet, amidst the urban bustle, the village retains its rural roots, offering a tranquil way of life. Its safe, community-oriented atmosphere is what makes Writtle particularly attractive to families, alongside great transport links and local schools.
At the heart of this charming village is the Village Green, complete with its duck pond and surrounded by captivating character properties. Besides being a peaceful spot for relaxation, it is also the main place for regular social gatherings. Step just beyond the Green, and you'll stumble upon the picturesque All Saints Church, testament to the village's rich history and heritage.
Families with children can also enjoy the recently refurbished Oxney Green Play Area, featuring an agility trail and a basket swing. If that’s not enough, the nearby Hylands Park, just 1.5 miles away, boasts an impressive 574 acres of rolling greenery and provides extensive walking trails.
Other fun-filled activities include pottery workshops at the Ceramics On The Hop, for those who’d like to try their hand at arts and crafts, as well as the Writtle Maize Maze, with its seasonal entertainment and family-friendly activities. One of the most anticipated events, however, is the annual Writtle Jazz Festival - a real treat to all the music lovers visiting or living in Writtle.
Although small, Writtle offers a good selection of shopping and eating out options.
The Co-op provides everyday essentials, while independent shops like D.S. Eagle butchers offer quality local produce. For more extensive shopping, Chelmsford, with its large shopping centre, is only a stone’s throw away.
When it comes to dining out, Writtle has no shortage of quaint cafés, traditional pubs, and international restaurants, including:
The Rose & Crown;
The Chequers;
Horse & Groom;
The Wheatsheaf;
Olio on the Green;
Pakwaan Indian Punjabi Cuisine;
The Potting Shed Tea Room;
Robyn’s Nest.
For those seeking connectivity, Writtle offers easy access to major roadways. The A414, on the southern tip of the village, will take you directly onto the M11 at J7, offering convenient links into London as well as Stansted Airport. Also accessible via the A412, the A12 runs north-south through Essex and provides connections to Colchester and Ipswich to the north and Brentwood, Romford, and London to the south.
If you prefer getting around by bus, there are several bus companies operating services to and from the village. While Writtle does not have its own train station, only 3 miles away, Chelmsford is a major transport hub, with its busy railway station on the Great Eastern Main Line.
There are two local schools for primary education, including Writtle Junior School and Writtle Infant School. While there isn’t a secondary school within the village itself, there are a number of excellent options in nearby Chelmsford, only 15 minutes away by bus.
Writtle is also home to Writtle Agricultural College - one of the oldest and largest specialist colleges, supporting careers focused on Business and the "Green Industries”.
