Voted as the fifth-best place to live in the UK in 2020, Maldon is one of Essex’s most desirable locations. This coastal market town offers unparallel historic charm and heritage, while also housing a vast selection of modern amenities, making it great for both professionals and families. While property prices are relatively moderate for Essex, the town’s popularity as well as unique character contribute to a steady market. And, the selection of well-regarded schools in Maldon further cement its reputation as an excellent location for families.
One of the biggest perks of living in Maldon, Essex is its peaceful environment. The crime rates here are significantly lower than the national average, and the town has seen a sharp decrease in crime since 2022. In fact, Maldon is considered to be the 43rd safest non-metropolitan district in England based on crime rates.
Today, the nearest to a battle Maldon sees is the world-famous Maldon Mud Race - a quintessentially British event which attracts around 300 entrants and 20,000 visitors every year. An absolute must-see for those holidaying or living in Maldon!
If you are looking to escape the crowds, though, you can relax in what seems a different world down on Hythe Quay, amongst the traditional Thames sailing barges. Alternatively, if you stroll a little further along, you will reach the Promenade Park, which is perfect for a family day out. Here, you will also find the Maldon Promenade Zoo, where you can meet a range of farm animals, including goats, donkeys, ponies, alpacas, rabbits, and many others.
During those rainier days, Madison Heights entertainment complex is a popular gem amongst the local families. With a huge variety of activities, including bowling, roller skating, pool, classic arcade games, children’s soft play, and eateries, a visit here will be fun-filled for both children and adults.
Those interested in history will appreciate a number of attractions dotted around the town. The Maldon Museum features insightful displays about Maldon’s history, while the Combined Military Services Museum is a treasure trove of militaria, housing an impressive collection of weapons, uniforms, spy equipment, and other artefacts. Architecture enthusiasts should not skip a visit to the Maldon Moot Hall, dating back to the 1420s.
The town is also home to its famous delectable product, Maldon Sea Salt, which has been harvested in the area for generations and is today enjoyed by people across the globe.
Maldon’s town centre is full of character, with its independent shops, many tucked down little alleys, complemented by major national retailers, including Costcutter, the Co-op, Boots, Greggs, Costa Coffee, and other high street favourites.
