The best places to get 10,000 steps in Colchester

If your smartwatch keeps pestering you to hit your 10,000 steps target, it can be difficult to keep thinking of new places to walk, jog or run. If you are living in Colchester, fortunately you are spoilt for choice when it comes to inspiring places to get those steps in. We are happy to recommend a few of our favourites.

Colchester parkrun – Castle Park

Parkrun has become an incredibly popular way to keep fit and meet friends. Colchester parkrun is held every Saturday at 9am in Castle Park. On your 5km jog or run, you will take in the beautiful city-centre parkland and loop round the castle itself, all while supported and cheered on by fellow park-runners.

This is a great way to get towards those 10,000 steps as part of the community, however Castle Park is equally lovely to enjoy at any other time. Even popping there for a quick walk will help you reach your daily steps goal.

High Woods Country Park

Within Colchester itself, close to the hospital, is a vast country park perfect for walking your way to 10,000 steps. Pick a different route every day, stop and enjoy the abundant wildlife and make the most of this fantastic local amenity. Why not take the family for a picnic or bike ride at the weekend so everyone can enjoy this Gren Flag awarded space while keeping physically and mentally fit?

Hilly Fields

This 32 hectare nature reserve near the city centre offers excellent paths for walking and jogging, and is perfect for a breath of fresh air. As the name suggests, the area is hilly, but there are flat patches so you can make your exercise as challenging as you want.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park offers the opportunity to stroll along the River Colne without ever leaving Colchester itself. Why not take your sandwiches on your lunchbreak and sit on a bench mid-way through your steps? Take some duck food, too and see if you can make friends with the feathered residents.

Explore Colchester

Last on our list but by no means least: if you want to get 10,000 steps in Colchester, you could easily hit your target by simply exploring the city itself. There are so many historical sites to discover so why not learn while you step?

This circular walk is 2.7 miles (4.4km) and passes several sites of interest including Roman walls and the largest remaining Victorian water tower in Britain. Buff up on your local knowledge for the next pub quiz and you will be at 10,000 steps before you know it.
