Work experience to junior negotiator in just one interview

By the Beresfords Marketing Team - 15th November 2012

Shaun Bull, 19, is a Sales Negotiator at Beresfords’ Chelmsford branch. He talks to us about his surprise employment and the crucial skill every estate agent should have.

Why did you want to be an estate agent?
When I was at school I couldn’t decide between being an accountant or an estate agent. After researching both I decided that working in an estate agency was much more exciting and varied than crunching numbers all day! There are valuations and viewings to attend, so no day is ever the same, and you are constantly interacting with a variety of people.

Were you familiar with Beresfords?
I live in Writtle, where Beresfords has a branch and quite a heavy presence, so I had seen all of their sales and lettings boards around the village. When I decided I wanted to be an estate agent they were one of the first companies that came to mind.

How did you get your job at Beresfords?
I had started a six month property services training course to learn more about working as an estate agent. The course was run by someone who had previously worked at Beresfords and she mentioned me to the management team. I had an interview with Director Michael Sayers and then Managing Director Paul Beresford, thinking that I might be in with the chance of some work experience. To my surprise I was offered the job of Junior Negotiator, as part of their apprenticeship scheme.

What does your job involve?
When I first started I began with basic jobs around the office such as speaking to applicants and helping with office admin - but I’ve since completed my National Association of Estate Agents Level 3 certificate to become a Negotiator. I hope to become a Senior Negotiator in the next 2 - 3 years.

Are you familiar with Essex?
I grew up in Writtle and work in the Chelmsford branch but I also completed two weeks training at Beresfords’ busy Colchester branch. There is so much going on in Essex, so my knowledge comes in useful when showing people round that aren’t familiar with the area.

What is the most important skill an estate agent needs?
Good communication is key as an estate agent. We deal with dozens of buyers and sellers every day and it’s important to keep them updated on the progress of their sale or purchase, and manage expectations so that everyone is happy.
