Focus on Chelmsford

Chelmsford is not only the County Town of Essex but also the geographic centre making it ideally placed for access to not only one of the world’s major cities in London but also to the coast with Essex thought to have the longest coastline in the country.

It is very much a commuter heaven thanks to its mainline train station with a direct link to London Liverpool Street in as little as ½ an hour.

But apart from its commuter credentials, Chelmsford is far from lacking in other travel benefits.  The nearby A12 means that J28 of the M25 is only about 13 miles to the south whilst the M11 is about 16 miles along the A414 to the west of the town. Stansted Airport on the other hand is around 18 miles north.

The rivers Chelmer and Can flowing in and out of the Town add a scenic dimension, as does the impressive Chelmsford Cathedral not far from the High Street.

In the heart of the City Centre you will find two major shopping precincts including High Chelmer which is home to some of the leading retail brands. For those looking for a bite to eat then there are some scenic restaurants next to the river just a short walk from the High Street. Or you can have a stroll in some of the beautiful parks in the heart of the City.

Sporting facilities are renowned with the likes of the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre with one of the only ice rinks in the County. Chelmsford is also home to the County Cricket Ground which is conveniently located in the wide open space of Central Park.

Just outside the town is the 500 acre Hylands Park, a mecca for dog walkers and ramblers. There you will also find the stunning Hylands House.

An excellent choice and standard of schools are available with the likes of the New Hall School, King Edward Vl Grammar School (affectionately known as KEGS) and Chelmsford Grammar School for Girls, all of which are usually found at or near the top of the national academic league tables.

The City is surrounded by beautiful countryside with picturesque villages dotting the landscape. An example is Little Baddow on the banks of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Here you can relax in the quaint tearoom on the waterside at Paper Mill Lock, ideal if you are walking the 13 or so miles along the riverbank from the centre of Chelmsford to the tidal estuary at Heybridge on the outskirts of Maldon. Alternatively, you can take a gentle boat trip on the water instead!
